Great news from Stephen Smith – Central Surgery Practice Southend Patient Participation Group (PPG) voted unanimously to REJECT the downgrade of Southend Hospital services. It is hoped that other PPGs not only in Southend but in Basildon and Chelmsford, will follow suit. Here is a glimpse of a new strategy by which the national system of patient representatives can express their desire to stop the downgrading of hospitals and the relocation of services.
Southend PPG invites other PPGs to join them in demanding a retention of the new integrated social care policies but a stop to the depletion of services in the hospitals. In the case of Southend this would mean the retention of the Stroke department and other excellent services. Southend is on its way to becoming a city and it is foolhardy to think that increased patient movement (i.e. along the A127) and service reduction where 1 single specialist A&E would serve for 1.2 million people, is a logical way to go. It would bring risk and hardship to many and likely deaths. Other areas of the country have the same concerns and it needs to be made clear to the Government, whatever colour it is, that the people want their hospitals improved, not diminished, even if the public must pay by the cheapest means (ie. taxes). The strategy behind the latest NHS changes is understood…it is just not exactly what the people want. The politicians have to recognise this.
#SaveSouthend are encouraged to hear this news and further encourage campaign supporters to voice their concerns and speak to their local surgery PPG representatives (who can be found by speaking to the surgery practice manager).
