Today has been a momentous step forward following our hugely successful and well attended #SaveSouthend rally on Saturday. Sir David Amess, Conservative MP for Southend West has made a statement which can be viewed on his web site and he has signed the Save Southend A&E petition to Southend Council.
Our petition says,
We the undersigned oppose:
- Proposals by the Mid and South Essex NHS Success Regime to downgrade Southend A&E in any form. We believe that downgrading Southend A&E in favour of transferring all 999 emergencies to Basildon Hospital will cost lives in the Southend-on-Sea area.
- We call on Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to:
- Oppose any downgrade of services at the A&E department at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
- State publicly that the only acceptable A&E provision at Southend Hospital which Southend-on-Sea Borough Council will support is one which maintains a full 24 hour emergency care facility which accepts all 999 blue light Ambulances.
We thank Sir David for the remarkable u-turn on his previous stance and look forward to working with him as a campaign group fighting against the Mid and South Essex Success Regime proposals following his signed pledge to ensure the provision of a full 24 hour emergency A&E Department at Southend Hospital where all 999 blue light ambulances are accepted.
I was taken by the A&E ambulance to Southend hospital when I had my second stroke they ensured that all tests needed were taken in a quick and quiet way and then I was transfered to the stroke centre at Queens, Romford where I made a complete recovery. I am sure that going to Basildon hospital could have left me with severe difficulty in my recovery as it is 30minutes away from Southend, Strokes and Heart Attacks need a quick diagnosiss and the people of Southend really need their A&E department.
Thanks Lynne for your comment – and this is why the campaign is so important!
